Monitor review: Samsung SyncMaster B2030 LCD
Posted: August 24th, 2010 by Stewart Beyers
When it comes to designing a healthy, comfortable and productive work environment, one of the most important considerations is your computer display. A screen that is too small, not bright enough or offers poor picture quality will not only cause eye strain; it will also put strain on the back and neck, as you’ll find yourself craning your neck forward to see the screen.
Samsung have been making some of the best LCD monitors for a long time now; in fact we have standardised on Samsung LCDs for our staff here at CyberLogic. They are stylish, well priced, offer good picture quality and come with a 3-year warranty for peace of mind.
The SyncMaster B2030 is one of our favorite models. It is a 20” widescreen LCD from Samsung’s new 30 Series which was launched in February this year. Aimed at business and home office users, this monitor offers a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels with a 5ms response time. It also comes with a dynamic contrast ratio of 50 000:1 for great picture quality. In other words, this is a great screen with a picture quality that is more than adequate for business use.
In terms of aesthetics, the Samsung monitors are certainly some of the best looking LCDs around and the B2030 is no exception. It has a rich glossy black finish and a touch sensitive bezel with clear acrylic along the bottom edge to add some style. It adds a touch of class to the workspace, certainly more so than most of the similarly priced products from other manufacturers.
One of the key criteria these days is energy saving and Samsung have addressed this with the introduction of their MagicEco power saving technology which automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen in order to save power when the monitor is not in use. The B2030 also allows the user to choose between 100%, 75% or 50% brightness to save power.
Other features of the SyncMaster B2030 include Samsung’s MagicAngle, which allows the LCD to be viewed clearly from any angle and MagicReturn, which helps you manage your dual-monitor setup by automatically shifting to one monitor in the event of the other one switching off. When it comes to video inputs, the B2030 offers VGA and DVI-D interfaces.
If we have one gripe about most of the current monitors, it is that they are not height-adjustable. The B2033, like most of the competitor products, cannot be raised or lowered on its stand. Optimal positioning often requires the screen to be placed on a separate monitor stand, which raises it by another 15cm or so. This raised position provides a far more ergonomically friendly viewing position. Thankfully there are a number of decent monitor stands available, many of which offer extra functionality, such as storage space for CDs etc.
In conclusion, this is a great choice of LCD monitor for business use. It has a simple design, an excellent backlight and a very good contrast, all in a stylish package. As with similar products, you will probably want to raise the entire screen slightly for the best ergonomics but that depends somewhat on your workstation layout.
